At the 26th Taft Public Library Great Cardboard Boat Race in Mendon, Massachusetts, The Unsinkable Luau earned a second-place finish and the Summer 2026 Captain’s Choice Award.
The Captain’s Choice certificate recognizes the crew’s outstanding collaboration, innovation, and most attractive design. This is the rare paperwork that confirms what the tropical flowers had been arguing all afternoon.

THE LAUNCH
A crew dressed for both flotation and festivity
The boat arrived with its broad yellow hull intact and its crew in matching shirts, leis, grass skirts, flower crowns, and properly fastened life jackets. At the waterline, the paddlers settled into the open passenger compartment while the shore party made the final calculations customary to cardboard navigation: count the paddles, inspect the seams, and look confident enough that the boat believes you.
Once afloat, the wide beam and internal framing did their work. The crew established a rhythm, the bow stayed proud, and the tropical livery remained visible from a distance that naval architects generally reserve for ships made of less absorbent materials.
THE RACE
Second across, first in magnificence
The Unsinkable Luau crossed Lake Nipmuc under paddle power and finished in second place. Race photographs show the boat upright, crew aboard, and moving with the sort of deliberate authority that can only come from several people trying to steer the same rectangle at once.
At the shoreline, the Luau arrived amid a crowded field of corrugated rivals. The hull had taken on the marks of honest service, but it remained recognizable, recoverable, and sufficiently seaworthy to support a post-race inspection by its delighted builder.
THE BEAUTY PRIZE
The flowers were structural after all
Taft Public Library’s published award list defines Captain’s Choice as the prize for the most attractive boat. The official certificate goes further, recognizing collaboration, innovation, and most attractive design. The yard accepts this as final confirmation of the Distributed Luau Buoyancy System’s secondary visual effects.
Palm leaves, pineapples, flamingos, hibiscus, a grass-skirt gunwale, and the yellowest finish on the lake were not applied casually. Every decoration carried a precise design responsibility, even when that responsibility was simply to look excellent while passing another boat.
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
The boat came home. The reputation got larger.
After the awards, Capt. Dan stood beside the recovered hull for the traditional thumbs-up. The Luau showed the creases, softened edges, and damp testimony of a real race, but it had completed its assignment: carry the crew, reach the finish, bring home hardware, and leave Lake Nipmuc with more stories than cardboard.
The yard thanks Taft Public Library, the race volunteers, the safety crews, the other builders, and everyone along the shore who cheered for a box with a pineapple on it. The complete vessel record now includes two 2026 honors—and one emphatic answer to the question printed in the old shanty: she floats. She truly floats.
